Boils are painful, pus-filled bumps on the skin that are triggered by the infection of one or more hair follicles. This contagious condition affects both sexes and start as red, tender lumps that grow as they are filled with pus. These rupture and drain in about two weeks. Large boils may leave a scar and may occur with a fever.
Small boils can be treated at home in most cases through a heat application 15-20 minutes 3 times a day. A hot wash cloth or hot pack will increase blood flow to the infection and draw more bacterial fighters (neutrophils) to the area. If the boil if firm, it is not recommended to open and drain the boil. Wait for the boil to become soft or formed before treating through drainage with a hot compress.

Hot Packs, applied continually to the boil, increase circulation, pushing pus to the surface, and hastening the formation of a head. Soak a washcloth in warm water, wring it, and use it as a compress for twenty to thirty minutes, three to four times a day.
